Text Tonic’s Influences . . . .

The advice and guidance that our staff provide is in line with the basic tenets of Positive Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioural and Brief Solution Focused ideologies. These are the main influences but there are other areas that we also incorporate to a lesser degree.

Positive Psychology

Positive Psychology is the title given to the study of positive emotions. It is a recent branch of Psychology that began in 1998 by a man named Martin Seligman. Positive Psychology studies the strengths and positive attributes that enable individuals to thrive. Seligman, who had worked on depression for 30 years felt that Psychologists had missed an important component of well-being. He suggested that rather than devoting attention to lives that had gone desperately wrong, psychologists should change tack, focusing instead on people for whom everything was going well.

Positive psychologists seek to discover and nurture genius and talent, and to make normal life more fulfilling, rather than to focus on curing mental illness. Practical applications of positive psychology include helping individuals and organizations identify their strengths and use them to increase and sustain their respective levels of well-being. While psychologists knew virtually all there was to know about depression, Seligman said they knew almost nothing of the secrets of a happy life. Discover what they are and it might give you a recipe that people could learn to make themselves happier and more satisfied with their lives.

Cognitive Behavioural Aspect

This relates to the idea that our thoughts create our feelings which in turn shape our behaviour. If we examine our thoughts more closely, we will have greater control over our feelings as well as our behaviour. We may possess thought patterns that are so ingrained that they are never challenged yet these thoughts could be limiting our potential. Awareness of these mental links can help improve life’s journey.

Brief Solution Focused Interventions

This approach is change oriented and is focused on the problem at hand. This process encourages people to utilize their own strengths and helps them to move from a problem oriented focus to a solution oriented focus. This intervention is based on small changes that result in further changes. When people are able to see some difference they begin to value their own coping skills. The central premise is people empowerment. The approach focuses on an individual’s strengths, talents and preferences for the future to help individual achieve their goals.
